Fix Your Rear-Foot-Elevated Split Squat

The most common complaint with the rear-foot-elevated split squat (other than it being a brutal exercise that can leave you waddling the day after): Feeling a straining sensation, or discomfort, in the hip flexor or quad of the elevated leg.

Too many women have struggled, and depleted their sanity and happiness, from disliking their bodies and fighting the number on the scale. They’ve used exercise as punishment for overeating, to “fix” body parts they don’t like, to “earn” the right to eat dessert. And I have done all those things too. I have also, thankfully, had the privilege to work with numerous women who decided enough was enough: They knew there must be a better way to approach health and fitness rather than endlessly obsessing over fat loss and a smaller number on the scale.

They instead chose to use exercise as a means to discover the incredible things their bodies could do. They chose to focus on moving their bodies more frequently in ways they enjoyed; ways that made them feel good about themselves. They focused on improving their workout performance when possible and celebrated personal records, in their many wonderful forms.

Don’t Focus on Fat Loss as Gyms Reopen

It began the moment gyms were forced to close their doors: People became concerned that they would lose the results they worked so hard to achieve since they could no longer adhere to their normal workout routine.

Many don’t have the luxury of a home gym (those of us who do were, perhaps, more grateful than ever for our at-home setup) or they can’t get “in the zone” for at-home workouts because they get easily distracted by something (or someone?) else.

The Coronavirus Pandemic Isn’t the Time to Get in the Best Shape of Your Life

There are exceptions to every rule, this one included. If your life has been minimally affected by the Coronavirus pandemic, then you may be able to devote more effort, time, and attention on your fitness and nutrition regimen. If that’s the case, this article isn’t for you.

But if you lost your job, you have a job that puts you on the front lines, you’re working much more than usual, you’re juggling working from home with homeschooling your children, or you’re otherwise experiencing increased levels of stress, anxiety, uncertainty during this time, piling on more stress by demanding you “get in the best shape of your life” is an unnecessary burden.
